Cloud Photo Libraries Need Duplicate-Merge Controls

A family combined photographs from several phones and computers into one cloud account. Thousands of duplicate images appeared, some with edits, some inside shared albums, and others carrying older captions. Deleting them one by one risked removing the version that contained the most useful information.
Photo libraries create duplicates through backups, device transfers, messaging apps, scanning, and repeated downloads. Storage tools can identify similar files, but a simple delete button does not account for the different metadata attached to each copy.
A proper merge function should compare resolution, editing history, capture date, location, captions, album membership, faces, and sharing links. The user should be able to keep the highest-quality image while preserving selected information from the other versions.
The service should explain why two images were identified as duplicates. Near-identical photographs taken seconds apart may represent different expressions or moments and should not be merged automatically. Confidence indicators and side-by-side previews would help users decide.
Shared photographs need extra care. Removing one file should not silently break an album used by relatives or erase comments contributed by other people. A merge should update links where possible and warn when another user’s access may change.
Photo collections often become family archives over many years. Duplicate controls should reduce clutter without flattening that history. A careful merge system would save storage, improve search, and protect the captions, edits, and relationships that make one version more meaningful than another even when the underlying picture looks the same.
Undo should remain available for a reasonable period because users may not notice a lost caption or album connection immediately.
The system should preserve a merge report showing which file became the master copy and which metadata was transferred. That report would make later questions easier to resolve and would help users trust a cleanup process applied to thousands of images at once.
